What Is Oral Thrush?
Oral thrush, also called oral candidiasis, is a fungal infection in the mouth. It is usually caused by a yeast called Candida that normally lives in the body in small amounts. When the balance shifts, it can grow and cause white patches, soreness, and irritation.
Who Is More Likely to Get It
Thrush can affect anyone, but it is more common in infants, older adults, denture wearers, and people with dry mouth, diabetes, or a weakened immune system. It is also seen in people using inhaled steroid medicines or going through chemotherapy or radiation.
How Compounding Can Help
When a provider prescribes an antifungal, a compounding pharmacy can prepare it in forms that are easier to use and better tolerated. Options your prescriber may consider include:
- Custom-strength antifungal rinses prepared to the prescription
- Flavoring to soften bitter tastes and support daily use
- Sugar-free versions for patients with dry mouth or dental concerns
- Dye-free or preservative-conscious versions for sensitive patients
- Alternative forms for children, denture wearers, or people who struggle with standard products

A Note on Compounded Medicine
Compounded medications are not reviewed or approved by the FDA and are prepared only with a valid prescription. Nothing here promises a specific result, and compounded preparations are not presented as superior to commercially available products. Topical antifungal options for oropharyngeal candidiasis, including topical amphotericin B, are addressed in current Infectious Diseases Society of America guidance — your provider decides what is appropriate.
