From Medical Center to Doorstep: Compounded Medications for Prescribers Across Southern California's Ten Counties
A patient treated at a medical center in one county often lives in another. When an approved product does not fit and a compounded medication is the answer, the practical question becomes how it reaches them, and how soon. This guide covers the timeline, what we need to begin, and what happens when an ingredient is out of stock.

Quick answers
Mixwell Compounding Pharmacy, in Chino, CA, makes most in stock medications the same day or the next day, and packages typically reach patients within Southern California in one to two business days of shipping. We need the prescription and payment to begin.
| Question | Short answer |
|---|---|
| How long does a compounded medication take? | Most in stock medication is made the same day or the next day. Within Southern California, packages typically arrive in 1 to 2 business days after shipping. Carrier delays can occur. |
| What do you need to start? | A prescription from the prescriber and payment. The sooner payment is complete, the sooner the prescription is processed, filled and shipped. |
| What if an ingredient is not in stock? | If we can source the active ingredient, we typically receive it in 1 to 3 business days, then fill and ship the same day it arrives. Carrier delays can occur. |
| Which counties do you serve? | All ten Southern California counties, with delivery across California. |
| Do you accept insurance? | No. Call (909) 378-7301 for pricing. Compounded medications for people can generally be charged to an HSA or FSA. |
| Do you prepare injectables? | No. Mixwell performs non sterile compounding only. |
The continuity problem across a large region
Southern California spans ten counties, and a patient visiting a medical center may live a long way from where they were treated, so a medication that cannot be filled locally becomes a gap in care.
The distance matters most for the patients compounding serves best: a child who needs a weight based liquid in a flavor they will accept, an older adult who cannot swallow a tablet, or a patient who reacts to a dye or preservative in the commercial product. For these patients the approved catalog has a gap, and the practical task is closing it quickly and predictably.
Our companion guide, When the Commercial Product Does Not Fit, covers what a 503A pharmacy can and cannot do. This guide covers the other half, which is how the medication gets from prescription to patient.
How a prescription reaches the patient
A compounded prescription moves through five steps, and the two that most affect speed are receiving the prescription and receiving payment.
- The prescriber sends the prescription by fax or e prescribe, with each component, strength, and dosage form, the patient's phone number and the delivery address.
- We confirm the formulation with the prescriber if anything needs a decision.
- The patient or family completes payment. We begin once we have both the prescription and payment.
- We prepare the medication. In stock medication is typically made the same day or the next day.
- If an ingredient is not in stock and we can source it, we typically receive it in 1 to 3 business days, then fill and ship the same day it arrives.
- We ship the medication. Within Southern California, packages typically arrive in 1 to 2 business days of shipping, and carrier delays can occur.
For our Northern California delivers, we see typically have seen 1-3 business days, but again, carrier delays can occur.
These timelines describe what we usually see. Parcel carriers control final delivery, so delays can occur that are outside our hands. When a medication is time sensitive, tell us the date it is needed when you call, and we will tell you honestly whether we can meet it.

Our county pages describe local coverage in more detail: San Bernardino County, Los Angeles County and Orange County.
When an ingredient is not in stock
If we do not have an ingredient in stock and can source the active ingredient, we typically receive it within one to three business days, then fill and ship the prescription the same day it arrives. Within Southern California, the package then typically reaches the patient in one to two business days.
Two honest caveats apply. Not every ingredient can be sourced, and some ingredients are on shortage or have supply limits. We will tell you early if we cannot obtain one, so you can choose another path rather than wait.
Some preparations, such as controlled substances, carry additional requirements that can affect timing. If your prescription involves one, tell us when you call.

Most delays come from an incomplete prescription or a payment not yet made, and both are within your control. A short checklist for prescribers and office staff:
- List each component and strength, and the dosage form.
- When a commercial product exists, note the change and why it matters for this patient.
- Include the patient's phone number and a delivery address where someone can receive the package.
- Ask the patient or family to complete payment promptly, since we begin once we have both the prescription and payment.
- Stay reachable for a pharmacist call if a formulation question comes up.
- Tell us the date the medication is needed.
Our prescriber's guide to writing compounded prescriptions covers the prescription itself in more depth.
Scope and standards
Mixwell is a PCCA member, 503A pharmacy that prepares non sterile medications for an identified patient against a prescription, under USP 795 and USP 800, and does not prepare injectables or other sterile products.
| Standard | What it covers | Applies to Mixwell |
|---|---|---|
| USP 795 | Non sterile compounding, including beyond use dating | Yes |
| USP 800 | Handling of hazardous drugs, including negative pressure containment | Yes. We operate a purpose built USP 795 and USP 800 compliant lab. |
| USP 797 | Sterile compounding | No, because we do not prepare sterile products |
| Section 503A | Compounding for an identified patient against a prescription | Yes |
| California State Board of Pharmacy | State licensure, PHY #60692 | Yes |
We prepare for an individual patient and do not supply inpatient floor stock or office use inventory. Our lab article describes the facility, and our guide to beyond use dating explains how each preparation's date is set.
Common needs, stated honestly
Compounding offers a different strength, form or ingredient list, and each need below also carries an honest note on approval and evidence.
| Need | What compounding can offer | Honest status |
|---|---|---|
| Pediatric weight based liquid | A concentration that keeps the volume measurable, in an accepted flavor, with a dye or sweetener left out where the formulation allows | An approved pediatric product may fit and is generally the first choice. See our pediatric compounding page. |
| Swallowing difficulty | A liquid or rinse instead of a solid form | Not FDA approved, and water containing liquids carry shorter beyond use dates. See our dysphagia support page. |
| Multi active topical pain cream | One preparation combining actives | A randomized trial of compounded topical pain creams found no advantage over placebo, and no topical ketoprofen is FDA approved. See what the evidence shows. |
| Hormone preparations | Custom strengths and routes | Not FDA approved. The National Academies recommended restricting compounded bioidentical hormone therapy to patients who cannot use an approved product. Hormone class warnings still apply, and whether hormone therapy is appropriate for a patient with a cancer history is a decision for the treating team. |
For case managers and office managers
Call before and confirm your organization's policy on outside prescriptions, and make sure the patient and family know that Mixwell does not accept insurance and that we begin once we have the prescription and payment.
- Check your organization's policy on where prescriptions may be sent and on compounded medications.
- Call early with the drug, strength and form so we can confirm availability and timing.
- Give the family our number and tell them payment starts the process.
- Confirm the delivery address and that someone can receive the package.
- Tell the family that storage instructions and the beyond use date are on the label, and that they should follow both.

Common questions
The hospital is not near me. How long will it take for my medication to reach me?
Most medication that is in stock is made the same day or the next day. In most cases we have seen packages reach your doorstep within Southern California within one to two business days of being shipped, though delays can occur because of how parcel services handle delivery. To start making your medication, we need the prescription from your prescriber and payment. The faster payment is completed, the quicker your prescription is processed, filled and shipped.
What if you do not have the ingredients in stock?
If we do not have the inventory in stock and can source the active ingredient, we can typically receive it within one to three business days. We then process, fill and ship your prescription the same day we receive the ingredient, and you can expect the same one to two business days within Southern California. Not every ingredient can be sourced, and we will tell you if we cannot obtain one.
What do you need to start making my prescription?
We need two things: the prescription from your prescriber and payment. We begin once we have both. Because each preparation is made for one patient and Mixwell does not bill insurance, payment is part of starting the process.
Is Mixwell affiliated with my hospital?
No. Mixwell Compounding Pharmacy is an independent pharmacy and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or a contracted vendor of any hospital or health system. Check your organization's policy on sending prescriptions to an outside pharmacy.
Which counties do you serve?
We serve San Bernardino, Riverside, Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, Ventura, Santa Barbara, Kern, San Luis Obispo and Imperial Counties from our Chino, CA pharmacy, and deliver across California.
Can I pick up my medication instead of having it shipped?
Yes. Patients can collect their medication at our pharmacy at 13788 Roswell Ave, Ste 158, Chino, CA 91710. Call (909) 378-7301 to arrange a time.
Do you prepare injectables?
No. Mixwell performs non sterile compounding only. We do not prepare injectables or any sterile preparation, and we do not supply inpatient floor stock or office use inventory.
Which standards apply to your compounding?
USP 795 governs non sterile compounding, USP 800 governs hazardous drug handling, and section 503A of the FD&C Act sets the conditions for compounding for an identified patient. Mixwell is licensed by the California State Board of Pharmacy and operates a purpose built USP 795 and USP 800 compliant lab.
Does Mixwell accept insurance, and can I use an HSA or FSA?
Mixwell does not accept insurance. Compounded medications for people can generally be charged to an HSA or FSA account. Call (909) 378-7301 for pricing.
