What Is Veterinary Compounding?

Veterinary compounding is the preparation of custom animal medications, made by a pharmacy to a veterinarian's written order. A veterinarian may reach for a compounded drug when the strength, dosage form, or flavor of an approved product is not suited to the patient.

What Mixwell Can Compound for Animals

Mixwell prepares these by prescription, in forms and strengths a veterinarian selects:

  • Flavored liquids and chews in tastes pets accept, such as fish, chicken, or beef
  • Transdermal gels for animals that resist pills, often applied to a cat's ear
  • Tiny, precise doses for small pets and exotics
  • Alternatives when a needed medication is discontinued or unavailable

How Veterinary Compounding Is Regulated

Compounded animal medications are prepared under a specific FDA framework, and they are not FDA approved. On April 13, 2022, the FDA published final Guidance for Industry #256, which describes the conditions under which the agency does not intend to take enforcement action when veterinarians and pharmacists compound animal drugs from bulk drug substances, including that a valid veterinarian client patient relationship is established. The guidance took effect on April 1, 2023, and compounded animal drugs remain unapproved under federal law. A valid prescription from your veterinarian is required.

Who Prescribes Veterinary Compounds

Compounded animal medications are ordered by licensed veterinary providers for their patients:

  • Veterinarians in general and specialty practice
  • Veterinary hospitals and clinics
  • Exotic and avian veterinarians

Their patients include dogs, cats, small mammals, birds, reptiles, and other animals not raised for food.

How Mixwell Prepares the Prescription

Mixwell compounds each animal medication to the veterinarian's exact order in a purpose built lab. We compound under USP 795 for nonsterile compounding and USP 800 for hazardous drugs, using HD negative pressure containment when a preparation calls for it. As a PCCA member pharmacy, we prepare each formula by prescription. Mixwell is a nonsterile pharmacy and does not make sterile products or injectables.

Mixwell Compounding Pharmacy is located at 13788 Roswell Ave, Ste 158, Chino, CA 91710. We serve Chino, Chino Hills, Ontario, Pomona, Diamond Bar, and Rancho Cucamonga, and we deliver across California.
