What Is Feline Hypertension?
Feline hypertension means a cat has high blood pressure. It is most common in older cats and is often linked to chronic kidney disease or an overactive thyroid. High blood pressure in cats can be "silent," so it is sometimes found only after it affects the eyes, heart, kidneys, or brain.
Why Daily Dosing Is Hard for Cats
Cats are famously hard to pill. Many hide, fight, or spit out tablets, which makes a daily medicine tough to keep on schedule. When doses are missed, blood pressure can be harder to manage over time.
How Compounding Can Help
A compounding pharmacy can prepare a veterinarian's prescription in forms that are easier to give a cat. Options your vet may consider include:
- Transdermal gels measured in tiny amounts and applied to the inner ear
- Flavored oral liquids (such as fish or chicken) that cats may accept more easily
- Very small, precise strengths suited to a cat's size
- Water-free (anhydrous) liquids designed to help keep certain medicines stable
- A custom mix of strength and flavor to fit one specific cat
