How It Works

What is amlodipine?

Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker. On April 29, 2026, the FDA approved Amodip, an amlodipine besylate chewable tablet from Ceva, for the control of systemic hypertension in cats. The FDA calls it the first FDA approved amlodipine product for veterinary use [1][2].

What is an oral liquid suspension?

An oral liquid suspension is a liquid made of tiny solid medicine particles spread through a liquid base. The medicine is not fully dissolved. The pharmacy makes it to a veterinarian's order, and the dose is measured by volume with an oral syringe.

What is a suspending base?

The base is the liquid vehicle that keeps the particles evenly spread so each dose is consistent. One example is SuspendIt from PCCA. Its manufacturer describes it as an aqueous base that is gluten free, alcohol free, paraben free, and dye free, with a pH of 5 to 6, and preserved with sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate [3]. These are the manufacturer's descriptions.

What compounding in a suspension base provides

  • A dose measured by volume, so the amount can be set to the individual animal
  • A strength set by the veterinarian, instead of fixed tablet strengths
  • A liquid for pets that will not take a tablet
  • A base chosen without ingredients a particular patient should avoid
  • Flavoring chosen by the veterinarian and pharmacist
  • A default beyond use date set by USP 795 for preserved water based liquids, which is 35 days [4]

Amodip labeling information from the FDA states that cats under 2.5 kg cannot be accurately dosed with the 1.25 mg tablet [1].

When veterinarians choose it

  • General practice and internal medicine veterinarians who need a liquid for an individual pet
  • Veterinarians whose patients will not take or cannot be dosed accurately with a tablet

Clinical Details

What does the evidence show?
  • The FDA approved Amodip, an amlodipine chewable tablet, for control of systemic hypertension in cats on April 29, 2026 [1][2].
  • The FDA states that any compounded animal drug, including compounded amlodipine, is not FDA approved, and that the FDA has not evaluated its safety, effectiveness, or manufacturing [2].
  • The FDA states that compounding animal drugs from bulk drug substances violates the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, and that compounding from an approved dosage form is permitted under specific conditions [2].

Findings come from the cited studies and do not promise any individual outcome.

Why is it compounded, and how is it typically used?

Why it is compounded

The only FDA approved veterinary amlodipine product is a 1.25 mg chewable tablet for cats [1][2]. A veterinarian who needs a liquid, or a dose that tablet cannot give, may order a compounded preparation.

Dosage forms and strengths

  • Strength set by the veterinarian
  • Suspension base chosen with the pharmacist, with flavoring on request
  • Volumes matched to the prescription

Dosing is the veterinarian's decision.

How Mixwell prepares it

Mixwell compounds these liquids in Chino, California under USP 795 standards for non sterile preparations [4]. Safety information

For Amodip, the FDA advises that veterinarians check blood pressure regularly, monitor kidney and liver values early in treatment, and that owners watch for decreased appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea [1]. Cats under 2.5 kg cannot be accurately dosed with the Amodip tablet [1].

Human amlodipine labeling warns of low blood pressure and lists edema as the most common reaction [5]. Amlodipine is prescription only. The FDA has not evaluated compounded amlodipine for animals [2].

Diagnosis, dosing, and monitoring are the veterinarian's responsibility. Pet owners should talk with their own veterinarian before using any medication.
