Common Questions
Is topical finasteride FDA approved?
No. The only FDA approved finasteride products are oral. In April 2025 the FDA alerted providers, compounders, and consumers to reports of adverse events with compounded topical finasteride, including effects seen with the oral drug that sometimes persisted after stopping. Your prescriber should review those risks with you before prescribing.
Are compounded medications FDA approved?
No. Compounded preparations are not reviewed or approved by the FDA for safety or effectiveness, and they are dispensed only with a valid prescription for one patient. The FDA recommends an FDA approved drug when one is available and appropriate for the patient. Your prescriber decides when a compounded preparation fits.
Can a compounded medication simply copy a commercial drug?
Generally no. Federal law restricts compounding drugs that are essentially copies of commercially available products. The exception is a change made for an identified individual patient that the prescriber determines produces a significant difference for that patient, such as a different strength or the removal of an ingredient they react to.
How does a prescriber send a compounded prescription to Mixwell?
Prescribers can call, fax, or send an electronic prescription. The order should name each active ingredient and its strength, the base or vehicle, the dosage form, the quantity, and the directions. Our pharmacist confirms anything unclear before compounding, and can talk through vehicle options for the oral cavity beforehand.
