Why it is compounded

FDA approved selegiline for dogs comes in four fixed tablet strengths [1]. A veterinarian whose patient will not take tablets, or needs a dose the tablets cannot give, orders a liquid compounded.

The Anipryl label says do not exceed 2.0 mg per kg once daily, and that the tablets are not for human use. It contraindicates use with known hypersensitivity. It does not recommend selegiline for behavior problems such as aggression, and it says three dogs in trials showed increased aggression [1].

The label warns against combining selegiline with tricyclic antidepressants, SSRIs such as fluoxetine, ephedrine, and amitraz. It lists waiting periods of 14 days after stopping Anipryl before starting a tricyclic or SSRI, and 5 weeks after stopping fluoxetine before starting Anipryl. It advises monitoring blood pressure if used with alpha-2 agonists [1].

Common reported effects in the label's trials included vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, and loss of appetite. The label says safety in breeding, pregnant, and nursing dogs has not been determined [1].
