Clinical Overview

What is Musculoskeletal Support?

Musculoskeletal support refers to concerns involving muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments, and connective tissues. These concerns may affect movement, daily activities, and physical function. Patients may experience temporary or ongoing symptoms that lead a healthcare provider to consider individualized treatment options.

Who is more likely to have it

  • Active adults and athletes
  • Older adults
  • People with physically demanding occupations
  • Individuals recovering from injuries or procedures
  • Patients with chronic musculoskeletal conditions

Where compounded medications fit in with Musculoskeletal Support:

Commercial medications are often available only in specific strengths and dosage forms. Some patients may prefer a topical preparation, require different ingredient combinations, or need formulations without certain dyes, preservatives, or excipients. A healthcare provider may prescribe a compounded preparation when customization is appropriate.

How Compounding Can Help

When a provider prescribes a compounded medication, a compounding pharmacy can prepare formulations tailored to individual needs.

  • Custom strengths prepared to the prescription
  • Topical creams, gels, and transdermal preparations
  • Several active ingredients combined into one preparation
  • Dye free or preservative conscious formulations
  • Allergen conscious preparations
  • Alternative dosage forms when oral products are not preferred

The prescribing provider determines whether a compounded preparation is appropriate for the individual patient.

What to ask your provider

  • Could a topical preparation be appropriate for me?
  • Would a custom strength be beneficial for my situation?
  • Can multiple ingredients be combined into one prescription?
  • Can this be prepared without certain dyes or preservatives?
  • Should my current medications be reviewed for interactions?
  • What dosage form would best fit my needs?

Common Questions

Do I need a prescription for a compounded medication?

Yes. Every compounded preparation is made for one patient with a valid prescription from a licensed prescriber, such as a physician, nurse practitioner, dentist, or veterinarian. If you do not have one yet, ask your provider whether a compounded preparation fits your situation, and they can send the order to us.

How long does compounding take?

Longer than a standard fill, because each preparation is made by hand after our pharmacist confirms the formula with the prescriber. Timing depends on the preparation, ingredient availability, and whether anything on the order needs clarifying. Call the pharmacy for a current estimate on your prescription.

Can I use my HSA or FSA to pay for compounded medications?

You should be able to use a health savings account or flexible spending account for compounded medications prescribed for you. We cannot charge veterinary prescriptions to these accounts. Check your plan's rules if you are unsure, and call the pharmacy for pricing.
