When compounding fits

Compounding fits when a commercial product cannot meet a patient's need. Common reasons are a dosage form the patient cannot take, an ingredient the patient must avoid, a strength that is not sold, or a drug that is discontinued or in shortage. The prescriber decides, and our pharmacist documents it.

Common reasons to compound
NeedWhat we can prepareWhat we need from you
The patient cannot swallow the form Oral liquids, troches, suppositories, or topicals The dosage form and strength you want
A dye, preservative, or filler must be avoided A preparation without that ingredient, where the formula allows The ingredients to leave out
The strength is not sold A custom strength made to your order Strength, quantity, and directions
The drug is discontinued A preparation of the active ingredient, when the rules allow it A note that the product is discontinued
The drug is on a shortage list A preparation while the drug is on the FDA or ASHP shortage list, and within 60 days after the shortage ends, under California Board of Pharmacy rules The drug name. Our pharmacist checks the lists.
The dose depends on weight Strengths sized to the patient, with flavors for children and pets The patient's weight and the dose you want

If a commercial product exists, document why it does not fit

Federal law (section 503A) and California rules treat a compounded preparation as a copy of a commercial product unless a change made for the individual patient produces a significant difference, as determined by the prescriber.

A short note on the prescription is the cleanest record. If it is missing, our pharmacist will call your office.

Prescriber questions

What is compounding, and when is it appropriate?

Compounding is the preparation of a medication for one identified patient, on a prescriber's order. It is appropriate when a commercial product does not meet the patient's need, such as an allergy to an ingredient, a dosage form the patient cannot take, or a strength that is not sold. The prescriber decides, and our pharmacist reviews every order.

How do I send a prescription to Mixwell?

Fax it to (909) 378-7071, or call (909) 378-7301 to give the order to a pharmacist. Include the patient, the prescriber, each ingredient and strength, the dosage form, and the directions. We call your office if anything is unclear.

Does Mixwell do sterile compounding or injectables?

No. Mixwell is a non sterile compounding pharmacy. We do not prepare injectables, eye drops, or other sterile preparations.

What do you need if a commercial product already exists?

Federal and California rules treat a compounded preparation as a copy of a commercial product unless a change made for the individual patient produces a significant difference, as determined by the prescriber. A short note on the prescription is the cleanest record. A drug that is discontinued or on the FDA or ASHP shortage list is handled differently, and our pharmacist checks those lists.

How long does compounding take?

Turnaround depends on the formula and our current workload. Our pharmacist confirms the time when we receive the order. Call (909) 378-7301 if a patient needs a specific date.

Can I send prescriptions for veterinary patients?

Yes. Veterinarians can send patient specific prescriptions for dogs, cats, and small or exotic animals. Office use limits apply, so call (909) 378-7301 before ordering.

What do patients pay, and do you take insurance?

Mixwell does not accept insurance. Patients should call (909) 378-7301 for pricing. Compounded human prescriptions should be eligible for HSA or FSA payment. Veterinary prescriptions cannot be charged to these accounts.

Where do you deliver?

We deliver across California, and patients can pick up at 13788 Roswell Ave, Ste 158, Chino, CA 91710. We serve prescribers in Chino, Chino Hills, Ontario, Pomona, Diamond Bar, Rancho Cucamonga, and surrounding Inland Empire communities.

Which prescribers can send orders?

Any California licensed prescriber acting within their scope of practice, including physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, naturopathic doctors, podiatrists, dentists, veterinarians, and certified nurse midwives. We do not prepare eye drops, so optometrists are not a fit.

How do I reach a pharmacist?

Call (909) 378-7301 and ask for the pharmacist. Weekday hours are 9am to 5pm. Saturday and Sunday hours are 9am to 5pm by phone and appointment only.

What are your office use limits?

Office use limits apply under California and federal rules. Please call (909) 378-7301 for more information before ordering.
