How It Works

What is enrofloxacin?

Enrofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibacterial. The FDA approved Baytril Taste Tabs for dogs and cats in 22.7, 68, and 136 mg chewable tablets. For dogs, the label lists skin infections, respiratory infections, and bladder infections caused by susceptible bacteria. For cats, it lists skin infections [1].

No FDA label describes an enrofloxacin capsule made by a pharmacy. A compounded capsule is not FDA approved.

What is a compounded capsule?

A capsule is a small shell that holds a measured amount of medicine mixed with an inactive filler. The pharmacy weighs each dose to the veterinarian's order, so the strength doesn't have to match a tablet.

What a capsule gives a veterinarian

  • A strength that follows the animal's weight. The label dose is 5 to 20 mg/kg in dogs and 5 mg/kg in cats, once a day or split in two doses [1]
  • Doses that fall between the 22.7, 68, and 136 mg tablets
  • A filler chosen with the pharmacist, dye free on request
  • A dry form. USP 795 gives nonaqueous solid dosage forms a default beyond use date of up to 180 days [3]

For veterinarians

  • Small animal and general practice, emergency, and referral hospitals treating dogs and cats
  • Send the species, weight, mg per capsule, and quantity. Call (909) 378-7301 to talk with our pharmacist
  • The label states that federal law prohibits extralabel use of enrofloxacin in food producing animals [1]. Mixwell prepares these capsules for companion animals only

For pet owners

  • Your veterinarian picks the dose. Give exactly that amount, and finish the course they set
  • Don't open or crush a capsule unless your veterinarian or our pharmacist says to
  • Call your veterinarian if your cat seems to have trouble seeing, or if your pet has a seizure

Clinical Details

What does the evidence show?
  • Baytril Taste Tabs are FDA approved for skin, respiratory, and bladder infections in dogs and for skin infections in cats, when bacteria are susceptible [1].
  • The label lists chewable tablets only [1].
  • The FDA states that any compounded animal drug is not FDA approved and that it has not evaluated the safety, effectiveness, or manufacturing of a compounded drug [2].

Findings come from the cited studies and do not promise any individual outcome.

Why is it compounded, and how is it typically used?

Why it is compounded

The approved pet product is a chewable tablet in three strengths [1]. A veterinarian who needs a dose between those strengths, or a form a pet will accept, may order a capsule compounded.

Dosage forms and strengths

  • mg per capsule set by the veterinarian
  • Filler chosen with the pharmacist, dye free on request
  • Quantities matched to the prescription

Dosing is the veterinarian's decision.

How Mixwell prepares it

Mixwell compounds these capsules in Chino, California under USP 795 rules for non sterile preparations [3]. The FDA says compounding animal drugs from bulk drug substances is not allowed [2], so our pharmacist confirms the source of the enrofloxacin before compounding. We also confirm the strength with the veterinarian and set the beyond use date. We ship across California. Veterinary prescriptions cannot be charged to an HSA or FSA account.

Safety information

The Baytril label lists these contraindications: known sensitivity to quinolones, and small and medium breed dogs during rapid growth, about 2 to 8 months old. Safety is not established for large and giant breeds while growing [1].

In cats, the label warns of rare retinal toxicity and says not to exceed 5 mg/kg per day. It advises caution in animals with known or suspected CNS disorders, since seizures have been rarely reported, and says quinolones are linked to cartilage damage in young animals [1].

Reported reactions include vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, lethargy, ataxia, and seizures. In cats, reports also include dilated pupils, retinal degeneration, and vision loss [1]. The label is for animal use only. People with quinolone hypersensitivity should avoid contact, and eye exposure should be flushed with water [1].

These warnings come from the tablet label. No FDA labeling describes a capsule made by a pharmacy. Diagnosis, dosing, and monitoring are the veterinarian's responsibility.
