Clinical Overview

Mebendazole 100 mg/mL Oral Suspension is a compounded liquid form of an antiparasitic medication. The only mebendazole product approved in the United States is a chewable tablet for patients age two and older. A compounded suspension gives prescribers a measured liquid dose for patients who cannot chew or swallow a tablet.

How it works

  1. The pharmacist suspends mebendazole powder in a flavored oral vehicle at the concentration the prescriber orders.
  2. Mebendazole belongs to the benzimidazole class of anthelmintic drugs, used for intestinal worm infections.
  3. Less than 10 percent of an oral dose is absorbed, so the drug stays largely within the digestive tract.
  4. A liquid lets the prescriber order a dose by volume instead of by whole tablet.
  5. The bottle is shaken before each dose, because the drug is suspended rather than dissolved.

When prescribers choose it

  • Pediatricians dosing children who cannot chew a tablet
  • Family medicine practices treating household clusters where members need different doses
  • Infectious disease and travel medicine clinics
  • Gastroenterologists managing intestinal parasite cases
  • Hospice, skilled nursing, and long term care teams whose patients cannot take solid dosage forms

Dosage forms and strengths

  • Concentration set by the prescriber
  • Flavored to improve acceptance in children
  • Dye free and alcohol free versions on request
  • Bottle volume sized to the prescribed course
