The patient in front of you needs a strength, a form or an ingredient list that no manufacturer makes. Here is how that prescription travels from your Irvine, Anaheim or Newport Beach office to our lab in Chino, and what you should expect at each step.

Quick answers

Mixwell is a non sterile compounding pharmacy in Chino, CA. We prepare medications for an identified patient on a valid prescription and deliver across California, including Orange County.

Question Short answer
Do you serve Orange County? Yes. We ship and deliver across California, and Orange County offices send prescriptions by fax or e prescribe.
How long does a prescription take? Most non sterile preparations are ready in 24 to 48 hours when the ingredients are in stock. If an ingredient has to be ordered, add one to three days.
Do you prepare injectables? No. Mixwell performs non sterile compounding only.
Do you accept insurance? No. Call (909) 378-7301 for pricing. Compounded medications for people can generally be charged to an HSA or FSA.
Can I call before I write the prescription? Yes, and we encourage it. A short call settles strength, base and form first.

When the catalog does not fit

Compounding serves the patient who falls outside the commercial catalog. That might be a child who needs a measurable liquid dose, an adult who reacts to a dye, or a patient who cannot swallow a tablet. It is not a first choice when a suitable approved product exists.

Orange County practices meet the same four gaps again and again:

  • Strength. A weight based dose does not divide cleanly into a manufactured strength.
  • Form. The patient needs a liquid, a troche, a suppository or a topical instead of a tablet.
  • Ingredients. A dye, sweetener, preservative or filler is the problem, not the drug.
  • Availability. The product is discontinued or listed on FDA's drug shortage list.
A good compounding partner should make your prescription clearer, not more complicated.

Chino sits about 35 miles from Irvine, so we do not pretend to be the pharmacy down the street. What we offer is a pharmacist who picks up the phone, a USP 795 and USP 800 compliant lab, and delivery that reaches your patient. Our article on fast track delivery across Southern California explains the logistics.

How a prescription becomes a preparation

You choose the ingredient, strength and dosage form. The pharmacist then selects a base, checks compatibility and assigns a beyond use date under USP 795.

Three decisions shape every preparation.

  1. The base. The cream, gel, suspension or troche base affects how the drug is delivered and how long the preparation keeps. Water free bases can support longer dating. See how bases set beyond use dates.
  2. The ingredient source. We compound with PCCA formulas where they exist. Read why Mixwell compounds with PCCA formulas.
  3. The documentation. When a commercial product exists, the prescription should state the change and why it makes a significant difference for that patient. FDA guidance on essentially copies under section 503A is built around that documented determination.
Good to know

If you are not sure which base or form fits, call us before you write the prescription. Our guide to writing compounded prescriptions in California lists what a complete prescription includes.

Sending your first prescription

Call (909) 378-7301, write the prescription, send it by fax or e prescribe, then confirm the beyond use date and delivery.

  1. Call the pharmacist. Share the drug, strength and dosage form you have in mind. Ask about base options and any ingredient limits.
  2. Write a complete prescription. Include the patient name and date of birth, your name and license or NPI, and your DEA number if a controlled substance is involved. List every component with its strength, plus the dosage form, quantity and directions. Add the clinical reason if a commercial product exists.
  3. Send it. Fax (909) 378-7071 or e prescribe to Mixwell Compounding Pharmacy, Chino, CA.
  4. Confirm the details. We call if anything needs clarifying, then confirm the beyond use date and how the patient will receive it. If your patient needs the preparation by a certain date, tell us when you call so we can plan around ingredient availability.
  5. Set expectations with the patient. Tell them Mixwell does not accept insurance and that pricing is by phone.

Patients can pick up in Chino, and we deliver by courier across the Inland Empire and Greater Los Angeles and ship across California.

From our pharmacy: how we work with prescribers

Mixwell opened in 2025, and the pharmacist's role starts before the prescription is written. Here are two examples of how that looks in practice. Details are generalized to protect patient and practice privacy.

A dermatology preparation for an Orange County med spa

A prescriber at an Orange County med spa needed a dermatology preparation that did not match a commercial product. Our pharmacist talked through the base and strength with the prescriber first. After the prescription arrived, we prepared it and delivered it to the prescriber's office for the patient the next day.

When a hospital team calls about an unavailable product

Hospital teams sometimes call when a prescribed product is not available for a patient. We work with the prescriber on the formulation, confirm the preparation is eligible to be compounded, and arrange courier delivery. When it arrives, our pharmacist is available to answer questions from the caregiver and the prescriber.

Please note

Compounding is only an option when it is lawful and clinically appropriate for the patient. Under federal and California rules, copying a commercially available drug requires a documented patient specific need or a drug shortage on the FDA list. Mixwell does not prepare injectables or sterile products.

What each specialty tends to ask for

Requests vary by specialty, but most come down to a form, strength or excipient the commercial product does not offer. The table lists common dosage form requests, not recommendations for any patient.

If you are a patient

Your prescriber sends the prescription. You can call (909) 378-7301 with questions about pickup, delivery or pricing. Mixwell does not accept insurance, and we do not set or change your treatment.

How to judge a pharmacy partner

Judge a pharmacy on process you can observe: how fast it answers, how clearly it documents, and whether each preparation arrives labeled and dated. Clinical response belongs to your clinical judgment, not to the pharmacy's marketing.

  • Response. Does a pharmacist answer questions before the prescription is written?
  • Turnaround. Is the stated timeline met, and are delays explained?
  • Labeling. Does each label show the ingredients, strengths and beyond use date?
  • Clarification. Does the pharmacy call you when a prescription is incomplete, instead of guessing?
  • Verification. Can you confirm the license with the California State Board of Pharmacy? Ours is PHY #60692.

Credentialing or risk management teams are welcome to call and walk through our standards with a pharmacist.

Safety and limits

Compounded preparations are not FDA approved and are made only for an identified patient. Mixwell does not prepare injectables, floor stock or any sterile product.

Please note

We do not promise clinical outcomes, and we do not describe a compounded preparation as better than an approved drug. If an approved product fits your patient, it is usually the right first choice. Compounding is for the patient it does not fit.

  • Beyond use dates for water containing liquids are shorter than for anhydrous bases.
  • Some ingredients cannot be compounded under federal rules, and we will tell you if yours is one of them.
  • Patients should talk with their health care professional about their specific circumstances before taking any medication.
